A minimum teaching commitment of 30 hours

Attendance:

Tuesdays, 6.00pm to 9.00pm for 20 weeks

Assessment:

Your tutor will arrange tutorials at regular intervals during the course. Each unit will be assessed with written feedback, including areas for further development, suggestions for improving practice and guidance on further reading.

Year 1 Modules:

The topics covered in three distinct units are:

Planning and enabling Learning. ( 9 credits)

This unit covers:

1: understand ways to negotiate appropriate individual goals with learners

2: understand how to plan for inclusive learning

3: understand how to use teaching and learning strategies and resources inclusively to meet curriculum requirements

4: understand how to use a range of communication skills and methods to

communicate effectively with learners and relevant parties in own organisation

5: understand and demonstrate knowledge of the minimum core in own practice

6: understand how reflection, evaluation and feedback can be used to develop own practice.

Principles and Practice of Assessment. ( 6 credits)

1: understand key concepts and principles of assessment

2: understand and use different types of assessment

3: understand the strengths and limitations of a range of assessment methods, including, as appropriate, those which exploit new and emerging technologies

4: understand the role of feedback and questioning in the assessment of learning

5: understand how to monitor, assess, record and report learner progress and achievement to meet the requirements of the learning programme and the organisation

6: understand how to evaluate the effectiveness of own practice.

Specialist Delivery Techniques ( 3 credits)

1: understand a range of inclusive approaches to the employment of specialist delivery techniques and activities within the learning environment

2: understand how to develop inclusive specialist delivery techniques.

Course Content

Entry Requirements:

There are no formal entry qualifications for this unit. Progression to further units and the level 4 qualification requires candidates to have, or be working towards, level 2 Literacy and Mathematics.

Attendance:

The course is ten weekly sessions of three hours; a further thirty hours of directed independent study is expected in order to meet the criteria for assessment. Overall assessment is based upon a portfolio of work, which is marked against set criteria. There are opportunities to practise teaching strategies within the group; to give presentations on educational theorists, and to share ideas and expertise.

Tuesdays, 6.00pm to 9.00pm for 10 weeks. FULL

Wednesdays, 6.00pm-9.00pm

Assessment:

Your tutor will arrange two tutorials during the course; one at week four and another at week 10. You will receive written feedback on your microteach which will outline your strengths and areas for development.

Understand and demonstrate a range of teaching and learning approaches in the specialist area.

One assignment: research a range of curriculum models and analyse your own curriculum in meeting the needs of learners.

Compare two methods of curriculum delivery and evaluate their effectiveness.

UNIT 5. Wider professional practice. Level 5- 15 credits.

One assignment: to produce a report on analysing your role and responsibilities within your context and in relation to national standards, awarding bodies and your organisation.

OPTIONAL UNIT 1. Action Research Planning. Level 5- 15 credits

This unit enables you to research your own field, look at key issues and implement an Action Research project.

There will be a choice of several options and you will be able to decide which one best suits your context. The assignment for this will then be negotiated together with assessment criteria; in short a â€œthesisâ€ type unit.

Assessment:

The course will be assessed through a range of differing assignments. With this much variation, you will be hard pressed to get bored! The great majority of the assessments will be coursework based, although we reserve the right to use examinations to assess your skills in a particular subject if we believe this to be the best way of working with you and the group you will be a part of.

Programme Aims:

A variety of subjects will be presented, and you will have the potential to explore psychology and sociology, media studies, law and a plethora of different exciting subjects, alongside the more traditional maths, English and science subjects that you will have studied previously. This will give you plenty of experience of a wide range of subjects, something that could help you decide which sort of course you would be most interested in pursuing as you apply to university. Along side this programme of study, you will develop all the skills needed to get on well when you get to university, such as how to write an academic assignment and the study skills that you will be expected to have. This will help you to get back into education in a supportive way, something that many people returning to education can find tricky.

By the end of the course the student will be able to:

Demonstrate the requisite skills for higher education, show a portfolio of work across a range of subjects, and students will have gained an understanding of this range of subjects, including being able to present GCSE equivalent certificates for English and Maths, something that many universities require as a condition of acceptance onto one of their courses.

Most people who complete the Access to HE course generally apply for and attend university. Access Diploma requires 60 credits, at least 45 of which must be at level 3.

Assessment:

Portfolio of evidence to provide examples necessary to meet assessment criteria in each area. This will be marked and externally moderated. Feedback will be given at points in the course via tutorials and portfolio marking to ensure that all criteria have been met.

There are three assignments.

Assignment 1: A written assignment on planning and evaluating own teaching. It includes elements from the Planning and Enabling learning unit.

Assignment 2: A presentation on a topic linked to helping learners overcome difficulties. It includes opportunities for self assessment and peer observation and feedback.

Assignment 3: Case study from your own specialist area.

In addition there will be two formal teaching observations from the course tutor and one from the line manager in your work place.

Entry Requirements:

The course will be taught at levels 4, 5 or above. Candidates must be able to demonstrate they are likely to achieve the required standard. They should also possess at least a level 3 qualification in their subject area. Applicants must undertake to identify a mentor who will be able to offer them subject-specific support. LLUK require teachers to achieve a qualification in English/literacy and Mathematics/numeracy, equivalent to at least Level 2 in order to achieve QTLS, and must then follow a CPD programme of at least 30 hours per year.

Attendance:

Two years. Three hours in the afternoon per week during term time.

Assessment:

Candidates complete theoretical and practical assignments. The theoretical assignments are written essays, group presentations and observed discussion; the practical assignments are related to teaching practice.

Since September 2007, all those who teach or train students aged over 16 in FE must register for and pass within 5 years courses leading to accreditation as a Qualified Teacher of Learning and Skills (QTLS). The PG Cert/Cert Ed validated by the University of the West of England, Bristol (UWE), covers all necessary units to gain this accreditation. For the Cert Ed the modules will be assessed at level 4 and 5, with the option of the final module being assessed at level 6. Entry Requirements:

Applicants must provide evidence which demonstrates that they can benefit from study at HE levels 1 and 2 and are likely to achieve the required standard. Applicants will normally need to have completed:
- two years" work with students in an educational setting and have achieved a qualification in English/Literacy and Mathematics/Numeracy, equivalent to at least Level 2. We welcome applications from students who do not meet the normal academic entry requirements, but have significant life and/or work experience, and will consider applicationson the basis of evidence of personal, professional and educational

- experience which indicate an applicant"s ability to meet the demands of a Foundation degree.

Attendance:

- Students will attend college on Wednesdays 6-9pm. A great deal of the teaching and learning on the course will take place in the workplace and at home. The course will run over 36 weeks of the year; some of this being entirely work-based learning. There will also be contact via online learning for three further hours per week.
Much use will be made of the Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle), so access to the internet is an essential part of the course. Lecture notes and materials will be available electronically and some modules will require you to use IT tohelp you undertake and present your work.

- Students must be prepared to work for up to 1,000 hours in total, including independent study, for each year of the course.

Assessment:

A number of methods will be used, including tutor-assessed group and individual written and oral assignments together with self-assessment and peer-assessment; essays, project work and examinations. Assessment requirements vary for each module but normally include a written assignment on a topic which might be negotiated with the module leader. Other approaches include short presentations, reflective journals and a portfolio of tasks.

Programme Aims:

- provide a coherent and relevant programme of study that enhances the ability of Learning Support workers to work effectively within a range of educational settings;

- build upon participants" previous and current experience and qualifications to ensure recognition and formal accreditation of professional work where possible;

- provide participants with rigorous study of educational processes and perspectives, embedded within their cultural, political and societal context;

- locate study and professional practice within an understanding of the significance of educational values and ethics, alongside a commitment to social justice;

- provide access to opportunities and awards for a group of learners who may hitherto have not been able to access higher education;

To achieve the degree, students need to pass a total of 240 credits, i.e. 120 credits at level 1 and 120 credits at level 2 over two years. Progression from the Foundation Degree into the BA Hons Education Professional Studies can take place once the participant has achieved 240 credits, at least 120 of which are at level 2.
A further 120 credits at level 3 are required to attain the BA Hons Education Professional Studies. Students completing this Foundation Degree may also progress through further study to QTS/QTLS.
