If you are looking to start a career as a bricklayer this is the place to start.
As you might expect our course is hands- on, with your trowel skills developing and improving over the year. Feedback and advice to improve your technique is given while completing practical assignments. Theory will be tested at intervals using on-line question and answer tests with a final on-line test at end of year. You will also build three practical assignments in the brick workshop. This along with a completed portfolio makes up the Diploma.
The course is ideal for those who want an apprenticeship in Brickwork who have not yet been able to find suitable employment.
- Safe working practices, with essential health and safety information
- Information, quantities and communicating
- Building methods and construction technology. Practical and theory study.
- Basic block laying, how to cut concrete and lightweight blocks correctly.
- Correct manual handling procedures for Brick and Block work.
- Basic cavity walling assignments built to current regulations and standards.
- Bonding. Contribute to setting out and building basic masonry structures.
- Technical information regarding vertical, horizontal, and damp-proof membranes currently used in construction.
- Functional Skills [IT Communications and Maths]
You will also undertake a range of practical tasks under simulated site conditions as part of the learning process.
There are no specific entry requirements though we do like to meet you beforehand to discuss the course and make sure it is the right course for you. Students must show enthusiasm and motivation to come onto the course
The course is 1 year with attendance 2 days a week.
The majority of time will be spent learning in the workshop through practical hands on activities. Classroom study will be both interactive and informative. You will also complete study based assignments.
At the end of the year you will be ideally placed for entry to an apprenticeship, if suitable employment can be gained, and continued study on an NVQ Level 2 in Brickwork or a full time Level 2 Diploma in Brickwork.
After successfully completing this course, students can then progress onto a higher level Brickwork course. This will enable you to fully qualify as a Bricklayer. Once you are qualified you may decide to join a larger firm, start your own business or even progress into a specialist field such as Civil Engineering.
Whatever you decide to do we have a dedicated careers adviser and many employer talks and visits to ensure you can make an informed choice.
Through regular feedback and one to one reviews with you tutor. Your work will be assessed continually through practical tasks and the completion of a log book of workshop based activities. Your theoretical work will be assessed by the building and completion of a portfolio.
