The Art Department at Stroud College is pleased to offer this two-year degree, validated by the University of the West of England at Bristol (UWE). Two specialist pathways have been validated which are Fine Art and Applied Arts. Successful graduation from this Foundation Degree leads to the qualifications FdA (Fine Arts) or FdA (Applied Arts). All students have the advantages of being members of both the UWE and Stroud College student bodies while studying for this degree. Progression to the 3rd year of a B.A. honours degree at UWE is guaranteed for successful graduates from this Foundation Degree.
The Fine Art Pathway and the Applied Arts Pathway allow students from either discipline to develop a particular specialism or explore and work across the boundaries of contemporary Fine Art and Applied Arts practice.
Specialisms within a Fine Art and Applied Arts context could include: drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, installation, site specific, artist"s books, time-based media, digital ands wet photography, ceramics and textiles.
Concentrating on practice and reflection, the course is designed to meet the development needs of the individual practitioner and to offer a range of practical options, as well as developing higher attributes in critical thinking and analysis.
To achieve the foundation degree, students need to pass a total of 240 credits, i.e. 120 credits at level 1 and 120 at level 2 over two years.
3 GCSEs at C or above including Maths and 40 UCAS points. You will need to have completed an Art Foundation course, an Access to HE in Art & Design, or similar level course, indicating that you are ready for higher level work in broad-based fine art study. We shall need to see a portfolio of workthat backs up your application, at interview.
There may be a requirement to attend an extended summer school in college as part of the course.
To provide an opportunity to develop a creative practice within a chosen discipline/ pathway.
- To provide an educational experience which offers students choice and independence in determining their own abilities and emotions within a subject discipline.
- To equip students with intellectual, practical and creative skills necessary for them to locate themselves and their practice within professional, social, historical, commercial and cultural contexts.
- To give students the confidence to develop informed independent judgements and critical and intellectual rigour.
- To ensure the development of key transferable skills
- To sustain an environment in which individual students may realise their full potential, and to progress onto Level 3 of a BA (Hons) programme or to find employment within the creative industries.

Progression to a full honours degree at UWE is possible for successful graduates from this Foundation Degree, which leads to the qualification FdA (Fine Arts)
The annual tuition fee for a Foundation Degree in 2010-2011 is £3,225.00 UWE and Stroud College aim to help their students substantially reduce the financial impact of this total, by offering two separate means-tested bursaries.
